The Canva Audio Editors

The Canva audio editor
Post by Amina Delali, May 31th,2023

What is it exactly

You uploaded an audio file, and added it to your design. Or you used an audio element, already available in Canva. The audio editor will be automatically available for you to edit your audio.
You don't have to install anything. You don't have to change any settings or configuration. Just click on the audio extract that you added to your design, and the editor will appear on the top bar, above your canvas.

What can you do with the editor?

In the top bar, you will see three buttons, and one icon button:

  • Audio effects: you can either add a 'fade in' effect, or a 'fade out' effect. You can either use the slide, or enter the time value of the volume's fade in the corresponding box. And you can do it for free.

  • Adjust: you click on the adjust button, and you will have the option to slide your audio track inside a bounding box, which will determine the time bounding of the extract that you are going to use for your design (the beginning and the end of the extract).

When the adjust button is activated, you can't resize the extract. You can only move the track inside the box. To be able to resize the box, click again on the adjust button to disable it. Then hover your mouse over the right or the left of the track. Two resizing handles will appear. All you will have to do, is to click on one of them, while moving it to the right or to the left to resize the extract.

But you have to take into consideration, that the time length of your audio, cannot exceed the duration of your design. The adjustment of the audio extract and the resizing are of course free.

  • Beat Sync: you click on the button, and the Sync now feature will appear. After clicking on the Sync now toggle switch, it will be possible to automatically synchronize the video footages to your soundtrack. And for now, you must have a paid account to be able to use it.

  • The volume button: this is the volume button. You click on it, and you will be able to either mute your audio (or unmute it, if it was already muted). You can also set the volume from 0 to 400. And of course, the feature is free.

You can access to the same adjust, volume, and audio effects features if you right click on the audio track, and you can even access to other free features from the same menu:

  • split your audio: divide any audio extract in two parts.
  • duplicate the selected audio extract.
And of course, you can also delete your track from the same contextual menu.

A motivational video created only with Canva

In the video below, you will see a video created by adding and animating AI generated images created using the Text To image Canva APP. Other elements were also used, like graphic elements, text, and of course, audio extracts from free music tracks already available in Canva

The audio editor was of course used to edit the extract, and to select the desired track and to manually synchronize the music with the text and the animated photos. I also used the editor to add volume fades effects between different music tracks.

But I think (I didn't test it yet), it would have been easier to use the automatic beat synchronization tool, to synchronize the music with the design.

Thoughts

This was my experience with the audio editor. If you have anything to say, or to add about any of the features, I would be happy to hear from you. Just drop your idea in the comments below 🙂.
